History and Architecture:
Although Pambula's separate parochial status dates only from 1880, it is one of the oldest Church centres in the diocese. Ministrations in the area date from 1842, when the Rev. Nott, an S.P.G. missionary, exercised an itinerating ministry in the Maneroo district.
It is possible that Pambula and Eden were visited before that by the Rev. E. Smith of Queanbeyan. Twofold Bay was the natural port for the whole Bega district then. With the appointment of the Rev. E.G. Pryce to Maneroo district in 1843, Pambula and Eden received regular ministrations. His registers show this and also occasionally visits to Boydtown. "Mariner at Boyd Town" as an occupation occurs several times in his registers.
This is the second Church upon the site. The first, a slab erection, stood from 1855 to 1865 or thereabouts. The foundation stone was laid on 17/11/1864 by Mrs.James Manning, "the Rev. J.L. Knight (incumbent), Edward Gwynne (late incumbent) and the Rev. Phillip Homan of Victoria" "A collection was made by three of Mr. James Manning's children, for a harmonium, stained glass windows and Church building fund, respectively.
The present picturesque old Church was built by the Rev. J.L. Knight, of local sandstone, in 1864. It was designed by Lieutenant Woore, of Goulburn.
Originally it had a shingle roof, but this was replaced in slate many years ago. The east well, which was showing signs of giving way, was strengthened with a concrete buttress in 1912. The chancel arch was tied subsequently with an iron bar. The Church is well furnished and has accommodation for 135 persons. It is said locally, to have been dedicated in 1866. Bishop Thomas consecrated it in 1868.
A plaque on the Church wall reads Christ Church 1866.
