The Freemans Journal of 25 June 1881 records "the new Catholic Church at Merriwa was solemnly blessed and opened on Sunday week by his Lordship the Bishop of Armidale assisted by the Very Reverend Thomas English of Maitland". Patrick Cronin who was deported to Australia as a criminal and who received a “Ticket of Leave” was instrumental in the building of the church.
